Collaboration
MHC regularly hosts educators and administrators for emerging professional development opportunities.
Intermediate School District (ISD) 917 and partnering school districts from the east and south metro are
strategic partners that regularly hold meetings at MHC on leading educational issues.
ISD 917, Metro State University and
MHC have also collaborated this year
to create mentorship opportunities
and graduate course work credit
to help recruit and retain teachers.
Fundamentals for American Indian
Education in Minnesota
In partnership with the Tribal Sovereignty Institute, Minnesota Department
of Education (MDE), Tribal Nations and the urban American Indian
community, MHC collaborated on this inaugural workshop for educators
in July 2024.
The program was designed to equip K-12 educators, staff, and
administrators with knowledge, tools, and resources to better serve
American Indian students and foster positive relationships. Participants
received brief language lessons in Ojibwe and Dakota, engaged with
tribal leaders, learned about tribal sovereignty, and played games
designed to revitalize and teach the Ojibwe language.
KAIROS Blanket Exercise
Furthering our commitment to Indigenous Education for all, the National
Indian Education Association led participants through an interactive
history lesson developed by KAIROS at the Minnesota Humanities
Event Center. Through this facilitated activity, participants walk through
a timeline of Native history, from pre-contact through treaty-making and
colonization, learning about examples of resistance and resilience into
the present day.
Metro American Indian Education Gatherings
In the fall and spring of 2024, MHC joined MDE to host Metro American
Indian Education Gatherings for Metro Indian Educators to learn about
legislative policies and funding opportunities related to American Indian
Education and to share ideas and best practices on how to collaborate
across school districts.

Reimagine Education Grant
By partnering with the Minneapolis Public School District (MPS),
MHC was able to obtain a grant from The Minneapolis Foundation’s
Reimagine Education initiative to foster stronger connections between
educators and the communities that they serve by creating place-based
learning experiences with community organizations.
Somali History and Culture Workshops
MHC team members partnered with the Brian Coyle Center –
Pillsbury United Communities, Scholars Dr. Habiba Ibrahim and
Salma Hussein, and several Somali young adults to create this
professional development workshop. Educators toured the
Cedar-Riverside/West Bank neighborhood and participated in
a workshop focused on Somali history and how to better hear
youth voices.
African American History Tour
Attended by educators and staff from Minneapolis, Hopkins,
Northfield, and Rochester as well as parents and students, the
tour explored African American history in South Minneapolis. This
experience was offered in partnership with the LTL International
Leadership Institute and its founder former Hennepin County
District Judge LaJune Lange.
