Telling Indigenous Stories
2025 Titles:
Generations of people in Minnesota have
never received any books or information
about Indigenous people during their
early formal education. MHC worked with
the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community
(SMSC) to close this gap by launching the
Native American Lives Series (NALS), books
that share stories of Dakota and Ojibwe
leaders who have influenced and shaped
Minnesota and the nation.
SMSC and MHC’s goal is to deliver a
complete set of the NALS series, including
an accompanying educator guide for each
book, in every school and library in Minnesota.
Our thanks to Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community and
Lerner Publishing for their continued support.

Upcoming 2026 Titles:
“As an Ojibwe child,
I couldn’t even dream
of access to books like
these in the Native
American Lives series.
What these books illustrate to young Dakota and
Anishinaabe kids is nothing short of an expanded
view of life’s possibilities.
